Lexington had an estimated 329,751 residents on July 1, 2025, according to the Census Bureau’s Vintage 2025 city and town population estimates. That is 7,181 more people (2.2%) than the 2020 census count of 322,570 and 33,948 more (11.5%) than the 2010 count of 295,803. Lexington is Kentucky’s second-largest city, behind Louisville.
What this means for you
- Growth has picked up again: the estimate rose by 2,680 people in the year to July 2025, after a dip in 2021.
- Lexington is younger and more highly educated than Kentucky as a whole.
- Fewer than 54% of homes are owner-occupied, well below the state rate, so renters are a large share of the city.
Population over time
Because Lexington and Fayette County share one urban county government, the Census Bureau counts them as the same place: the county estimate and the city estimate are identical. There is no separate “rest of the county” to compare.
