Voter ID
Under Kentucky’s rules, as the clerk’s voter ID page explains them, you can show a photo ID with your name issued by:
- Kentucky state government, or the U.S. government
- The U.S. military, the Merchant Marine or the Kentucky National Guard
- A U.S. college or university, public or private
- A Kentucky city or county government
If you do not have one of those, you can still vote by filling out a voter affidavit at the polls and showing any other photo ID with your name, including an out-of-state ID.
Voting by mail
Kentucky mail ballots are not open to everyone. You can get one sent to your home if you cannot vote in person and you will be out of Fayette County for all days and hours of in-person absentee voting, are enrolled in the Safe at Home address confidentiality program, or are sick, disabled or elderly and unable to get to the polls, according to the clerk’s mail-in absentee page. Military and overseas voters, students living outside the county, and voters in a hospital or care center can have a ballot sent elsewhere. Request one through the state’s absentee ballot portal by Oct. 20.
Registering for future elections
Registration for Nov. 3 closed Oct. 5. Kentucky closes its books 28 days before each primary and general election. To register or update your address for later elections, use GoVote.ky.gov, visit the clerk’s office at 162 E. Main St., Room 202, or mail the state registration form (PDF) to the clerk. You must be a U.S. citizen and Kentucky resident, 18 by the next general election, and not registered in another state, according to the clerk’s registration page.
What is on the ballot
The clerk’s list of general election candidates (PDF) shows races for U.S. Senate and the U.S. House; state Senate and House seats; county offices including PVA, sheriff and county clerk; district and appellate judges; and, in nonpartisan races, the urban county mayor, the council at-large seats, all 12 council districts and two school board divisions. Voters will also see a statewide constitutional amendment and three proposed local charter amendments (PDF). Which races appear on your ballot depends on your precinct; the clerk said sample ballots would be available in mid-September.
