Who looks after the roads
Two governments build and fix the roads in Lexington. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 7 office handles interstates and state routes, including I-75, I-64, New Circle Road (KY 4), Nicholasville Road (US 27), Richmond Road and Newtown Pike. The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government handles city streets, paving and sewer work. Utility companies also close lanes for their own projects.

Major state projects
KYTC’s Driving Lexington Progress program is a set of state construction projects on I-75/I-64, New Circle Road and Newtown Pike. Status from each project page:
| Project | What it does | Status |
|---|---|---|
| I-75 widening, Paris Pike to the southern split | Six to eight lanes from Exit 113 (Paris Pike/US 27) to the I-64/I-75 split at milepost 111, plus a median barrier wall; about $47 million | Began May 2024; completion expected by fall 2026 |
| New Circle Road (KY 4) widening | Four to six lanes from Leestown Road to the Norfolk Southern railroad, with a new double crossover diamond interchange at Leestown Road; about $51 million | Began November 2023; completion expected by summer 2027 |
| Newtown Pike (KY 922) widening | One lane added each way from New Circle Road to I-75, a Legacy Trail underpass near Citation Boulevard and a trail link to Newtown Court; about $28 million | Began January 2024; completion expected by spring 2027 |
What drivers should expect, according to KYTC’s travel advisories:
- I-75: KYTC said on Oct. 14 that a traffic switch overnight Oct. 15-16 would return southbound I-75 between the southern I-75/I-64 split and the bridge over Winchester Road (mile points 109.5 to 111) to its normal three lanes, with a full-width merge lane from I-64, after bridge deck work. Remaining work is overnight lane closures for final striping, which KYTC said it will announce in advance.
- New Circle Road at Leestown Road: the new double crossover diamond is open. Drivers cross briefly to the left side of the road between two signals, the same pattern as the New Circle and Harrodsburg Road interchange. Leestown Road stays at one lane until the project is done.
- Newtown Pike: KYTC lists no current traffic impacts.
The earlier I-75 widening from Newtown Pike (Exit 115) to Paris Pike (Exit 113) was scheduled for completion in November 2024.
Projects still in design
KYTC’s District 7 list also includes the US 27 (Nicholasville Road) access management project in Fayette and Jessamine counties. Its project page said on Aug. 18, 2026, that it is still awaiting funding to move to final design. The same list covers the Richmond Road restricted crossing U-turn project, the US 60 Winchester Road widening, Liberty Road widening and the RJ Corman overpass on US 27; see the District 7 page for each.
Short-term state lane closures
KYTC’s work zone feed, checked Oct. 24, lists no current or upcoming work zones in Fayette County. The Oct. 20-22 closures on New Circle Road (KY 4), U.S. 25 and I-75 have ended. Just outside the county, the feed lists a work zone on I-64 West between mile points 69 and 70.9 in Scott County through Monday, Oct. 26. Check GoKY on the day; short closures move with the weather.
City projects
- Tates Creek Road sewer work: the city’s closures list still shows the inbound right lane blocked from New Circle Road to Dove Run Road, now through Nov. 20. The city’s project release said this stretch should be finished by the end of 2026, and the full Merrick trunk sewer project, 7,200 feet of new pipe, by the end of 2027. The release said the Merrick Drive entrance from Tates Creek Road would be blocked for up to two weeks from around late October; the city’s Oct. 23 closures list does not show that closure, so its start could not be confirmed. Merrick Place and Merrick Inn can be reached from Dove Run Road.
The city also posts crash and closure updates on @LexWrecks.
Studies to watch
The city and the Lexington Area Metropolitan Planning Organization are running the Winchester Road Corridor Study, which held a public open house Sept. 10. Questions go to imagine@lexingtonky.gov.
