Where to watch
The city lists the fireworks at downtown Lexington and says they launch close to Main Street and Oliver Lewis Way, so Main Street near that intersection is the closest place to watch. For the patriotic concert the night before, the city suggests bringing blankets, lawn chairs and a picnic to Gratz Park; food trucks are on site.
Expect downtown street closures for the parade route and the race on the morning and afternoon of July 4. Our road construction and closures page carries the closures when the city announces them, and getting around Lexington covers downtown parking.
Fireworks rules in Fayette County
From the Lexington Fire Department’s fireworks rules and safety page:
- If it goes up or blows up, it is illegal in Fayette County.
- The only fireworks allowed to be sold or used are ground and hand-held sparkling devices: sparklers, ground spinners and fountains.
- Aerial and audible devices such as bottle rockets and firecrackers are banned.
- Lexington police cite anyone who breaks the local fireworks ordinance. State law, KRS 227.702, defines each type of consumer firework.
The department’s safety advice: buy only from a licensed store or stand, light one at a time, keep young children away from fireworks, never relight a dud, stand at least 6 feet from other people with sparklers, and never handle fireworks after drinking. Call 911 in an emergency.
